The catalog of Numismatic Auction 8
Ancient and Foreign Coins
The catalog opens with an intriguing selection of Greek coins, with lot 1 being a small gem: the tetradrachm of Acanthus in Macedonia featuring on the obverse a striking image of a lion attacking a bull (estimated at €7,000). Among the Roman imperial coins, noteworthy are a sestertius of Nerone with an exceptional portrait of the emperor on the obverse and Roma seated on the reverse (lot 26, estimated at €6,000), and an aureus of Vespasian featuring a standing bull on the reverse, in extraordinary condition (lot 29, estimated at €12,000).
The section dedicated to foreign coins is extensive, highlighting Albania, Austria, China, France, and the United Kingdom. Among the offered specimens, a magnificent 1841 mohur minted in the name of Queen Victoria (lot 192, estimated at €8,000) stands out for its excellent condition, graded MS 62. Following this, there is a beautiful group of eight imitations of Venetian zecchins minted in Eastern mints, attributed to places such as Chios and Mytilene.
Italian Mints
We then come to the heart of the catalog: the Italian section. It starts with a rare testone of Louis XII minted in Asti, featuring the king’s portrait with a cap (lot 330, estimated at €7,000). Here, variety is a strong point, with many mints represented and numerous rarities and high-quality pieces. Highlights include Renaissance portraits from the cities of Bologna, Casale, and Milan. For the latter, we mention the double ducat of Galeazzo Maria Sforza (lot 458, estimated at €13,000). The Venice section also offers various gems, such as the 1772 gold osella of 6 zecchins for Murano (lot 598, estimated at €40,000) and a fascinating and very rare half-zecchin of double weight struck for Ludovico Manin (lot 600, estimated at €10,000).
Papal Coins
Equally important is the section dedicated to papal coins, featuring a double florin of the camera in the name of Julius II (lot 620, estimated at €13,000).
Collections
The auction proceeds with collections. The first presented is dedicated to medal-making, with an important selection of specimens from the Renaissance to Napoleon III.
The Stemma Collection, focused on the coins of the Kingdom of Italy, holds some significant rarities in Auction 8: the 50 lire 1864 in near FDC condition, of exceptional quality (lot 1385, estimated at €150,000), the 5 centesimi 1904, mint condition (lot 1444, estimated at €40,000), and the 10 centesimi 1943 An. XXI minted in Aosta (lot 1459, estimated at €10,000).
Following is the second part of the Strada Collection, also featuring coins from the Kingdom of Italy, and the M.T. Collection, comprising coins, medals, and books from Naples, ranging from the Angevin period to Francesco II of Bourbon, which will certainly be appreciated by enthusiasts in the field.
The catalog concludes with the S.Z. Collection, showcasing papal coins from Paul III to Pius IX, and the Collection of a Gentleman from Cosenza, which includes a selection of coins from the oldest periods up to Victor Emmanuel III, along with medals.
A richly detailed catalog that is sure to capture the interest and curiosity of numismatic collectors.
