The Italian mints of Christmas Auction

Three gold coinso for three Italian mints

Among the numismatic lots offered at the Christmas Auction, taking place on December 13, 2024, at Villa Mosconi Bertani, are three fascinating gold specimens from three Italian mints.

The saluto d’oro of Charles of Anjou for Naples mint

Let’s start with the oldest of the three coins, the saluto d’oro minted in Naples by Charles I of Anjou (1266–1285). This specimen, of remarkable quality, features on the obverse the sovereign’s shield divided in two: the emblem of the Kingdom of Jerusalem on the left and the field scattered with the heraldic fleurs-de-lis of the House of Anjou on the right. The surrounding legend declares that Charles is, by the grace of God, King of Jerusalem and Sicily.
